FF7 Remake’s Yuffie Isn’t Really A Thief

FF7 Remake’s INTERmission DLC introduces Yuffie to the game. She’s a thief in a literal sense, but her abilities resemble older FF titles’ Ninja job.

Yuffie is about to have a starring role in the INTERmission DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where she’ll play differently from the other characters in the base game. Being a thief in the literal, occupational sense, fans may assume Yuffie belongs in Final Fantasy‘s recurring Thief job class, but her fighting style makes her something else.

Early odd-numbered Final Fantasy games had character class (aka “job”) systems. The original Final Fantasy allowed players to pick from six classes for each of the four main characters, all of which could be upgraded to stronger classes later on. These six jobs were inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, and they have returned in numerous entries in the series. Final Fantasy 3 let players switch character classes between battles, giving them a lot more customization, and Final Fantasy 5 allowed players to switch classes and abilities, allowing for all kinds of hybrid builds.

While FF7‘s characters originally had jobs during development, these were in name only. Cloud was a Mystic Knight, Barret was a Gunner, Tifa was a Shooter, and so on. In-game, though, each character’s abilities were instead determined by their equippable Materia, many of which were based on powers possessed by jobs in earlier Final Fantasy games. This means Yuffie also corresponds to one of the earlier job classes, but it doesn’t quite match up with her in-universe role.

FF7 Remake: What Yuffie’s Character Class Is

Yuffie steals from her party members at several points throughout FF7 and is attempting to steal an “Ultimate Materia from the Shinra Corporation in FF7 Remake. But in terms of her job, she’s a lot closer to a Ninja than a Thief. This can be seen in her default Materia; when the player acquires Yuffie as a party member in the original FF7, she will automatically have the Throw Materia equipped. Throw allows the character to toss an item in their inventory at the enemy, and it’s an ability that has been closely associated with the Ninja job throughout the series, dating all the way back to Edge in FF4 (though it was also added to the remake of FF3 as a Ninja ability).

Yuffie’s job was also originally described as a Ninja/Assassin in the Final Fantasy 7 Ultimania Guide development history book, further cementing the connection. She hails from the nation of Wutai, too, which is heavily inspired by Japan. Yuffie might be willing to steal from friend and foe alike, but her abilities define her as a Ninja, rather than a Thief.
